Class description
On this unique Ramah experience we will spend much of our three full days of programming (8/21-8/23) away from the retreat center, either kayaking or hiking in the beautiful Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. There will also be the option to remain at our beautiful retreat center, relaxing and enjoying the gorgeous grounds and comforts of Wild Rice Retreat.
About kayaking and hiking at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
This area is world renowned for spectacular sea kayaking—featuring beautiful sandstone sea caves, many of which can be paddled into. Kayaking on this program will be suitable for those new to kayaking as well as those more experienced. We will be working with professional, licensed kayaking guides. Each of our groups will have two experienced guides/lifeguards as well as a faculty member from our retreat. Participants should be proficient swimmers in order to paddle and be able to easily enter and exit a sea kayak. Please reach out to Jordan if you have any questions about this.
The hiking option is also a wonderful experience in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Trails feature beautiful forest landscapes with dramatic, expansive views of Lake Superior.
Faculty: Rabbi Jordan Bendat-Appell, Cantor Joanna Dulkin, Rebecca Minkus Lieberman, Sara Lynn Newberger, Rabbi Michael Schwab
*No previous experience at a Ramah camp or program required. All are welcome!

Ramah is the camping arm of Conservative Judaism. The mission of the Ramah Camping Movement is to create and sustain excellent summer camps and Israel programs that inspire commitment to Jewish life, and develop the next generation of Jewish leaders. At Ramah, thousands of children, teens, and young adults come together each summer in communities that nurture social, educational, physical, and spiritual growth, creating lifelong friendships, a love for Israel, and a strong Jewish identity.
Each year, more than 11,700 campers and university-aged staff members populate our ten residential camps, six day camps, and Israel programs. An additional 300 young Israeli adults join the Ramah camp communities annually, and help to inculcate in the campers a love of Hebrew language together with a familiarity with and connection to Israel.
The National Ramah Commission is the coordinating body of the camping arm of Conservative Judaism, operating under the educational and religious supervision of The Jewish Theological Seminary. The National Ramah Commission provides support, guidance, and educational planning on behalf of the network of Ramah camps throughout North America and Israel.
